Investor blames state officers for his woes
The owner of the troubled African Safari Club yesterday accused some unanmed personalities in the government and politicans of interfering with his business .
He said the government functionaries made ist hard for him to negotiate with potential buyers of his company .
Speaking for the first time over the saga surrouding his hotel chains , the chairmen of ASC Karl Jakob Rüdin blamed the government for not assisting him salvage the situation and said his company has suffered oppression from some government ministries .
He alleged that politicans trespass into his property to incite his former employees to gain political mileage .
as a result of this , he said , it was difficult for him to carry either negotiate with possible buyers of or accessa loans to repay debts .
Speaking from his Sh 250 million-six-acre private residence in Shanzu where the employees have pitched tent for close to a month , Rüdin allege that he has been held hostage in his own house -
" It is not difficult for me to run away from this country . But I have no reason to . Untill all the employees are paid their dues , I am going nowhere ", said Rüdin .
He dismissed claims that he had run bankrupt . Instead , he claimed that he was `rich in assets but poor on hard cash `. He however assured that he will pay all the Sh 57 million claimed by the 424 former employees including retirees .
The 83-year-old investor blames his woes on the 2007 post-election violence .
He claimed the violence led to dwindling of customer base , a fact that led to the ASC Limited incur losses amounting to Sh 2,6 billion .
" The company not only lost all its bookings but its entire income from the Group of Tours and Travel Agencies in six European countries , its airbus A320 aero planeand the curise ship Royal Star", he said .
The businessman claimed ASC had pumped over Sh 150 billion into Kenya´s economy and had brought in over 2,5 million tourists since it started operations in the country in 1967 .
The company has since sold most of is property to keep it afloat and pay its employees . It is estimated that about Sh 1,3 billion worth of property has been sold . Ruedin said that since the violence , only 15 of its 2,400 workforce remain .
In June , private security personell and armed policemen invaded one of ASC properties , the Flamingo Beach Hotel and eviced the employees and management on grounds that it was sold to new owners . The case is still pending in court . Directors of ASC claim that since then , the company has no offices , has no access to documents , files , computers , and therefore violently pushed out of business .
